Learners | Build a Driving Course

Driving Courses

If intensive driving courses are too demanding for you, but you want to be certain to get lessons when you want them, then build your own driving course. We call them route 66 driving courses because you can plan your own agenda at your own pace.

Route 66 Driving Courses

These driving courses are perfect for students who want to plan ahead and pass a little quicker than with traditional one hour weekly lessons.

How do they work?

Start by deciding how many hours of practice you feel comfortable with each week. We suggest that your lesson duration should be 90 minutes at a time. Ask your instructor to pre-book lessons for you in advance so that you will be prepared and ready for each lesson. Be reliable and be on time for each lesson. There is nothing worse than missing lessons or rushing to be ready to slow your progress.

Next if you haven't passed the theory, decide on a date you will pass it by and pre-book a theory test, or ask your instructor to do it for you. Be sure to allocate 90 minutes every few days to study for the theory/hazard test.

Once you have passed the theory test agree a sensible driving test date with your instructor and ask them to book it for you. Your instructor will be able to pick a day and time that fits in their diary. Once your test is booked you must commit to lessons. Cancelling and falling short on lessons will result in your test date being moved forward.

By planning ahead and taking our recommended 90-minute lessons sessions you will need fewer in car lessons because your learning is more efficient.

Why 90 minute lessons

Well is all down to the maths really. 60 minutes isn't enough time in the car, and two hours can be too long for some students, especially when you're starting out.

Did you know in 1877 the length of a football game was set to 90 mins because it was deemed to be the most appropriate length of time because it catered for the fitness levels of most players and the concentration/interest levels of those watching.

Did you know that the International Space Station travels at 17,500 miles per hour, 220 miles above the Earth’s surface and it completes an entire circuit of the world every 90 minutes.

Did you know that a 90-minute nap between 1pm and 4pm in an afternoon has been scientifically proven to help your cognitive functions for creativity, memory retention and logic? It seems like the Spanish and Italians have got it bang on with siestas.

Getting started...

Call the Elite office, and chat to a staff member about planning your own driving course. They will ask you about your availability, how many lessons you would like each week, and if you want access to our online theory test practice service, before booking your lessons in advance with an Elite instructor.

How many lessons will you need?

Because predicting the exact amount of driving lessons a person will need isn't an exact science, we offer a no quibble guarantee. Should you book & pay for more lessons than required and pass the driving test before using your entire course hours, then we guarantee to refund any unused time. Please see terms and conditions here.

If you need to top up your course hours, we will continue to give you further lessons at the discounted rate of the course you are on until you are test ready (providing you take regular weekly lessons)

If you want a guide to how many lessons people take please click here

PLEASE NOTE: Our Route 66 driving courses DO NOT include the theory or driving test fees, but you can include them as an add on to the course, and you can ask your driving instructor to book the tests on your behalf. (Please note: Elite or it's franchised driving instructors and not responsible if the DVSA cancels your driving test)
