Thinking of learning to drive?

Getting Started

Before you can get in the driver’s seat, you need a provisional driving licence. You can’t use this until you’re 17, but you can apply for it up to three months before your 17th birthday.

You can apply for a provisional driving licence from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), the cost to apply online is currently £34 or you can get an application form (Form D1) from the Post Office, to apply by post is currently £43.
The Theory Test

You have to pass your theory test before you can book your practical test.

You can book a theory test online at gov.uk.

The Practical Test

The practical test consists of an eyesight check, some vehicle safety questions and a 40-ish minute driving test, which will include specific manoeuvres.

You can make up to 15 minor driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more and you fail).

Make one serious or dangerous fault and you’ll fail.

To increase your chances of passing the driving test at the first attempt you’ll need to be driving to a consistently high standard on the weeks running up to your test, an Elite Instructor can help you to do this.

How will you know when you’re ready for your driving test?

When you’re consistently driving to a high standard on the run up to your driving test day, that’s how, but if you are still having bad lessons and making major or dangerous mistakes then you need extra practice.

Ask your driving instructor for a mock test this should simulate the actual test and will give you a good idea of what standard driving you are at.

If you pass the mock test then you have your answer.

Ash was looking for a good instructor and has started his lessons with Graham and sent this email into the Elite office.

Really happy with the driving instructor Graham he’s a top bloke and is clear in how he teaches me and when I’ve gone wrong

In terms of booking lessons he’s also accommodating and that’s so helpful

He also told me I’ve come a long way even in short time which is reassuring because learning to drive is tough
